Academia

Driven by my affinity towards art, physics, and tangibility, I chose to become a mechanical engineer. All those hours spent in makerspaces studying in 3 continents, not once did I envision myself arm-deep inside the gut of a 150lb Yorkshire swine lying face-up as I flushed ethanol into her via an endoscopically guided overtube. But there I was, one snowy February afternoon, in the basement of MIT’s medical facility, as my team of engineers and medical practitioners concluded an anticipative 30-day in vivo study of our novel soft-robotic system. It felt surreal that a product so simple could be pivotal in tackling patient non-adherence, a problem that claims 125,000 lives every year in the US alone. It is this gratification from the lasting clinical impact that enables me to be meticulous while designing medical devices, and establishes my aspiration to push boundaries in biomechanical engineering – with a focus on minimally-invasive surgery and targeted drug delivery.
